What is Urticaria (Hives)?-

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by sudden appearance of red, raised, itchy welts (rashes) on the skin. These lesions may vary in size and can appear anywhere on the body.

Urticaria occurs when the body releases a chemical called histamine in response to a trigger, leading to swelling, redness, and intense itching.

Types of Urticaria

  • Acute Urticaria – lasts less than 6 weeks, often due to allergies or infections
  • Chronic Urticaria – persists for more than 6 weeks and may recur frequently

Common Symptoms

  • Itchy, red or skin-colored raised patches
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Swelling that may change location (comes and goes)
  • Lesions that disappear within hours and reappear elsewhere

Common Causes & Triggers

Urticaria can be triggered by various factors such as:

  • Food allergies (nuts, seafood, etc.)
  • Medications
  • Insect bites or stings
  • Infections
  • Stress or emotional factors
  • Heat, cold, sweating, or sunlight
  • Cosmetics or skincare products ()

In many chronic cases, the exact cause may not be identified.

How is Urticaria Treated?

  • Antihistamines to reduce itching and swelling
  • Avoiding known triggers
  • Soothing measures like cool compresses
  • Advanced treatments in chronic or severe cases under dermatological care

When to Consult a Dermatologist?

You should seek medical care if:

  • The rash persists for several days or keeps recurring
  • Symptoms are severe or affecting daily life
  • There is associated swelling of lips, eyelids, or breathing difficulty
