What is Herpes Zoster?
Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral skin infection that causes a painful rash with blisters. It occurs due to the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV)—the same virus that causes chickenpox.
After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus does not leave the body. Instead, it remains dormant in the nerve tissues and can reactivate later in life, leading to herpes zoster.
Key Features of Herpes Zoster
- Painful, burning or tingling sensation before the rash appears
- Red rash with fluid-filled blisters
- Typically occurs on one side of the body in a band-like pattern
- Commonly affects the chest, back, or face
Who is at Risk?
- Individuals who have had chickenpox in the past
- Adults, especially above 50 years of age
- People with low immunity, stress, or chronic illness
Is It Contagious?
Herpes zoster itself is not directly contagious. However, the virus can spread from active blisters to someone who has never had chickenpox, causing them to develop chickenpox (not shingles).
Duration and Complications
- Usually heals within 2–4 weeks
- Some patients may develop post-herpetic neuralgia (long-lasting nerve pain)
